82. To The Youth of China
On the radio this morning I heard that there is a Chinese newspaper run by the Youth of China saying that these demonstrations provoked by the Olympic Flame are not meant as an offence against China!!! Of course they are not meant as an offence against China- at least these young people have understood that, even if their elders have not.
No one is against China. Everyone is against oppression- beating people up, locking up and killing people simply because they want to keep their own language, their own way of worship, their own culture. That is all there is behind all this- is that too difficult for those dim witted officials to understand?
No one has asked people to go out in masses and demonstrate, no one has organized these manifestations- there is no political power or anything of the like that has spurned all this- just the human will rebelling against what is repellent to human nature.
That is why when you get someone like the Governor of Tibet saying “Don’t anyone dare....!!!” one just feels like vomiting at the man. There is no political power that can stop this sense of vomiting- it comes spontaneous after such provocation. Parading one’s imbecility in front of the world means that something is wrong somewhere, and causes people to react.
No one is asking China to change her way of life, no one is questioning her way of government, in some ways one can say it’s better than democracy. It is China herself by abusing Human Rights that provokes this negative reaction from the rest of the world. No one is offending China, but China must be aware that it is what she herself does that will ensure that she will never again host the Olympic Games. And is that the legacy she wants to leave to her children?
On the other hand I should like to think that the Chinese youth will set an example to their elders and persuade those officials to observe Human Rights and in doing so I am sure it will not be long before the Olympic Games will then return to China- and this time there will indeed be a great celebration, one dream, one world. I hope it will be so.
