67. The Mighty Shame of China
They said on television earlier on that China was making every effort to appear full of grace to the eyes of the world through that mighty event, the Olympics. The authorities are concerning themselves even on the matter of applause. They are telling the crowds when to clap, how to clap, where to clap... all to do with a good dose of what educationally speaking we can call “crowd control” which the Chinese are the masters in absolute- Of course they know nothing about clapping with feeling and clapping from the heart to show gladness, joy, appreciation... That’s all capitalistic propaganda. So, now you know what to expect, when you go to the Olympics, don’t you?
Even though I am loathe to praise any one member of the last government, since they have plunged us so much in the mire, but today I was full of admiration for a one time Prime Minister, and Leader of the Left Wing Party here in Italy, Massimo D’Alema. It was he, who first thing this morning spoke out against the oppression of the Monks. And it was he who said to boycott the Olympics. Of course, this will never happen there’s too much money and what have you involved... not even to save those monks’ lives or safeguard their freedom... money comes first. And there is no shame big enough that cannot be covered by money. Apart from that, it’s not all that easy to boycott the Olympics when you think of it- besides it doesn’t really pay off... morally I mean.
What do you gain by boycotting? It won’t change the Chinese, it won’t give freedom to the Monks and the Dalai Lama will still not be able to go home because his homeland will still be
occupied by those who would gladly see his head on a spike. And yet when I look at the expression on each individual warrior of that wonderful Chinese
treasure, The Terracotta Army, I see the real Spirit of China. Each individual warrior has a unique smile, different from one other- that in itself is an amazing feat of its creator... Something like God and His Creatures- us- each one of us, Chinese included.
Yet, when I dwell on the way the authorities are preparing for these Olympics I cannot see anything even remotely resembling the authenticity of human candour that is so impressed in those clay faces resurrected from the womb of the earth. Why was only the clay resurrected and the Spirit of China left buried, consumed by the centuries. Why can’t the Spirit of China be returned to China... Why can’t the Chinese become human again? And why are the Chinese so afraid of the Tibetan Monks that they have to oppress them?
Does God put fetters on Butterflies?
