29. Why did Meredith Have to Die?
Was there any reason on this earth why Meredith should have died? Of course there wasn’t- there was no motive, no one wanted her to die- and yet she did. This is the absurdity of it all, she died because someone was no longer in control of their own faculties which is the obvious consequence of the effect of substances capable of altering your will power and the making of a perfectly healthy brain into a rotting mould of putty- that is the killer. That is why, when questioned, the accused say they didn’t do it- and you can well believe them because they had given up their wits to another force and were no longer in control of their own selves- which of course is no excuse for getting them off the hook- whoever they may be.
It seems quite fashionable nowadays to say, “Oh, but it wasn’t me,” “Oh, but I didn’t do it”. The papers are full of mothers who kill their own children and say it was the man on the moon. Youths kill their own girlfriends and goodness- it certainly wasn’t them!!! That’s why I gave a wry smile when I heard Emilio Fede, the director, presenter and factotum of the 6.50 news edition of Rete 4 TV say, somewhat irritated by the news from the reporter, that the police cannot find enough proof to nail down the accused who insist it wasn’t them: “Of course it wasn’t them,” the newscaster said fiddling about with the papers on his desk… “far be it for them to have done it…” he continued, his voice spilling over with irony. “Meredith went to the kitchen and got herself a knife then she lay back on the bed and slit her own throat… then she got up and threw her own mobile phone into a neighbouring garden, all on her own… For heaven’s sake,” Fede said slamming the papers on the desk with a face like thunder…
And that’s exactly what the rest of us think. Most people become crackpots simply because they crack the pot. So those 40 thousand students in Perugia from 140 countries around the world should try to remember that when the price to pay for a moment of ‘mental’ fireworks catches up and the withdrawal symptoms cramp their entrails it doesn’t just end there… at best, they end up with putty for a brain, at the worst we have what happened to Meredith.
The antidote to the devastation of drugs is creation, and my own small contribution is by dedicating this painting of daffodils, to me the flowers that most bring back thoughts of England, to Meredith.
