257. Libya: Latest Cock-up

France decided to bombard Libya and ordered Italy to follow suit. I beg your pardon Sir, since when does a country give orders to another completely sovereign country to go to war?
Firstly, the planes that France wanted to use to attack Libya were, are on Italian soil, acquired and is still the property of the Italian tax-payer. Before another country disposes of Italy’s resources, surely the Italian people through their government have every right to be consulted?
If France wants to be rid of Gheddafi, of whom I personally am no fan, that’s their affair but they need to coordinate their efforts with the powers that be... they can’t take it upon themselves to work outside NATO and to boss Italy about, nor are they to expect that Italy is to be responsible in shooting down every known dictator in the world.
As Italy’s present Minister of Defence Ignazio La Russa said in an Italian political debate on TV : "The French are hoping that not passing the command to NATO Americans will step back and allow the command to them." He then continued "There has never been enthusiasm in using weapons, Italy had only one choice and followed it with no enthusiasm. Without us the UN resolution - La Russa concluded, can not be applied. "
It needs to be remembered that although Italian planes were sent, they were so on a humanitarian basis and no shots were fired, also because one does not know for sure who or what is being shot at.
Franco Frattini, Italy's Foreign Affairs Minister, reinforced the Minister of Defence’s view by saying, “One does not hand over to others the keys to our own house.”
Meanwhile on the isle Lampedusa in Sicily, a never ending stream of human cargo disembarks from North Africa, continuously. Lampeduas is of course now bursting at the seams and there are more immigrants than natives which is the cause of worry for the damage it will cause to their livelihood which is based on the tourist trade, and at this point, they too will remain penniless. Immigrants, among whom racketeers are being harboured, try to find shelter wherever, even under lorries, still wearing their sea-drench clothes, while fights and squabbles for water and bread are the order of the day... This is how the rest of Europe has responded to Italy’s appeal for solidarity- absconding!
And now, this onslaught by France is the last thing Italy needed. At the end of the day behind France’s cock-up attempt at world domination, after all the massacring is over, is that France & Co. will get the oil; Italy, the illegal immigrants. Tut... tut... tut.. Where are the United Nations???
