"The EU's border management cannot be left to individual countries: it is not the border of a country but of Europe. " The President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano said speaking at the UN headquarters in Geneva. “The EU,” he continued, "is to define better rules on asylum and refugee protection."

“It is estimated that 1.5 million illegal immigrants have penetrated the borders of Libya,” Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, referring to the Commissions for Constitutional Affairs and Foreign Affairs on recent developments in the Mediterranean said.

No doubt as soon as they get the chance they will disembark on the shores of Lampedusa, Italy or possibly Greece, meanwhile the rest of Europe are burying their heads in the sand and letting Italy cope with it.  Very nice indeed. (says I)

The Minister also said that Italy was available to provide equipment and personnel police for a greater control of the ports in Tunisia from which immigrants come into Europe.  This arrangement  would also serve as a deterrent of a mass exodus to Europe.

As Elisabetta Belloni, Director General of Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head of the Italian mission in Libya and Tunisia said  "One thing is certain, we are the first to bring food aid to Libya."

Let’s hope the rest of Europe follows suit! Says I.

Meanwhile the flow of illegal immigrants unto the shores of Italy is never ending and although all that is humanly possible is being done by Italy to prevent a crises, one has to be aware that such immigrants could be quite normal human beings fleeing from a deplorable situation or simply downright criminals seeking to set up lucrative rackets in Italy or the rest of Europe of prostitution, pornography, drugs, theft, smuggling and all kinds of gratuitous crime and violence.

Those are the facts of life, some of whom in Europe are not men enough to face.
