249. The African Crises and Italian Politics
While various states in Africa are “burning” the Italian Premier Berlusconi and some of his ministers have gone to Sicily to see for themselves how best to meet the inundation of refugees who continuously disembark on Italian shores from these troubled states in Africa.
If anyone wants to escape the hell of turmoil that is going on in Africa their only chance of reaching a free county is by crossing the straights of Gibraltar and land in Spain, which is not allowed since they are pushed back into the sea by the said authorities and the same goes for Malta. The only solution for survival is land in Lampedusa in Sicily, which is the island south of Italy and directly faces Tunisia on the opposite side.
Fortunately, on this occasion the government have found a unique solution, making use of the empty houses built in order to host the USA military and their families which have now left the area. This may create some problems to the locals whose main income is from tourism as few people are not going to engage in the idea of spending their summer holiday by the sea surrounded by thousands of refugees. Still as ONU and the EU have come forward in support of this venture bringing gifts of food, clothes, equipment and volunteers, the Italian government are going ahead with this solution at this present point in time.
Well, the Italian government hopes to go ahead with seeking some kind of decent temporary accommodation for these people until they can get on their feet... if the press, other members of parliament and the Judges from Milan will allow the Italian government to go on existing, because it seems everything imaginable under the sun and moon has been done to put an end to this Berlusconi government. Does Italy really need this kind of riffraff treatment, specially at this particular time when the world is in such an upheaval?
