247. Berlusconi: Women’s Demonstration- the Motive

There were demonstrations yesterday by women, not only in several squares in Italy but also abroad in favour for the dignity of womanhood. A laudable cause indeed and all went off well, were it not for one detail- this was a plain and simple personal attack against the Italian Premier, Silvio Berlusconi.
Before anyone starts accusing me of being paranoid and saying I am blaming everyone for attacking Berlusconi personally, when this is not the case; I should like to point out I hardly think that on this account I have misjudged the situation- not when you see women holding a poster of a prison cell and a close-up view of Berlusconi’s face behind bars with a banner saying: “I have a dream.” I know I am not mistaking the real motive for such demonstrations, furthermore, to manifest pure, personal hatred for Berlusconi has hardly anything to do with any laudable cause on womanhood. And this, may I add, is in spite of what The Guardian UK allows the Left- Winger Italian Nichi Vendola say.
However, the thousands that turned out is not at all representative of the millions of women in Italy. In democracy it is worth remembering, it is not the numbers in the squares, but it is the vote which goes inside a ballot that counts.
Looking at those women demonstrating under false pretences, I noticed there are relatively few good-looking women who hate Berlusconi, yet many ugly ones who do- is that because they have given up hope to fall in his favour?
I recall Berlusconi’s daughter, Marina, once saying that she did not approve with her father’s life-style, nevertheless, he was entitled to it. I guess that is my opinion too, an opinion however that makes the “self-righteous” sect among us shake our heads fiercely- more in envy than in anger probably... it makes us mad when an eminent person acts out of the box, doesn’t it?
