388. Syria: What about the Refugees?
What has not been said, written, blogged, and rightly
so, on the atrocities inflicted on the people of Syria, is not worth
mentioning.
Now, these people are fleeing from Syria in hordes- and
guess where boatful, after boatful is landing? Lampadusa or Siracusa of course, those ports alongside the shores of Sicily. And guess what the rest of Europe, the rest of
the world, all those well-meaning bloggers, writers, journalists, politicians
are doing? Turning their backs on them. As refugees, these war-striken Syrians are no longer of interest. No one is concerned about these unceasing entries of
refugees landing on the shores of Lampadusa and Siracusa. No one cares if they are wounded,
sick, hungry, naked, homeless… no one that is except the people in Lampedusa, Siracusa, other ports and the Italian government who sustain their efforts.
Isn’t it time everyone stops wearing the mask of the
do gooder, stop paying lip service to the Syrian people, come forward and actually
aid these hundreds and thousands of refugees from Syria… yes, you Europeans, Americans,
Israelis, Australians… yes you the writer, the blogger turn your pen to pierce
the conscience of your politicians to aid these refugees from Syria landing
continuously on Italian shores…
Surely a Nobel Prize for Lampedusa and other southern Italian ports, considering
they are the only ports that have aided refugees from all over the world for years
and years, is long overdue?
