376. A Saint Unearthed
I found Foye Brewer’s story of Saint Foye,
which had up to now been unknown, exciting. And if it is exciting for adults it
will be even more so for children whose capacity for perception is by far more
acute. No one knew this saint had
actually lived and the priest in the Phillipines where the author was living at
the time asked her to choose another name since the name Foye was not a
Christian name. This was enough to provoke the author to find out the origins
of this saint which led her to Conques, a village in France to the church of
Ste Foy.
Foye Brewer, the author, is a retired
Civilian Officer from the US Army. As we know you have to always be on your
toes and alert for you never know when a moment of danger may strike- the peril
is always lurking round the corner, not only from the enemy but also from the
familiar and friendly.
This is precisely the atmosphere that
existed during the initial years of the Early Christians which the author
describes with realism. Foye, the saint lived in France in the third century
after the death of Christ during the reign of the Diocletian Emperor who was
famed for his hatred and vicious hunting down of Christians.
Foye, the author, recreates this early
Christian atmosphere that oscillated from the joy of being a Christian to the
fear of the consequences of being one. Tension is created with the step by step
increase of danger which makes the reader desperately wish that Foye, the Saint
will be saved. In spite of the martyrdom, the ending is bitter-sweet and is not
devoid of surprise.
Because of its historical innovative nature,
this book is a treasure for anyone but even more so for children. I certainly
hope a traditional publisher picks this one up… it would certainly be much
appreciated by many in search of a good Saint story of which there are so few
and far between.
