293. Italy: Monti- Russian Roulette

People are starting to murmur, if not crying out loud that Mario Monti, the new Italian Premier of a technocratic government is simply taking his time over getting things done.

Italians, foreign leaders and bankers expected Monti to bring out his guillotine and give a quick swish to  Italian expenditure and get Italy back on its feet again.  But apart from a few trips here and there abroad, nothing much else has happened.

It seems that Mario Monti is the only one who believes that Italy’s financial problems, do not in effect depend on Italy at all- even less on Berlusconi, but on the world crises which started way beyond the Atlantic Ocean and rippled into Europe.

Again, it also seems to me that Mario Monti is not going to let Italy be bullied into doing what the “financial despots” wants her to do in order to fill with fodder other people’s pockets. And this, as far as I can see is why he is playing Russian Roulette with time.

Berlusconi was right when at a meeting of the EU27 he told Nicholas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel that since they were the self-proclaimed leaders of the Euro power in Europe they had not done a good job in managing it.  They should have taken steps to have prevented the weakening of the Euro to this extent and they didn’t, not with regards to Greece, Italy or themselves.

The "Happy" Trio
This may also have been because from Italy’s debt, Germany stands to gain 50 billion Euros a year- that to me, rather than a demonstration of European fraternity is a clear display of exploitation with a vengeance similar to Shylock’s demand for his pound of flesh (Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice).

Maybe Germany should remember that when it was undergoing a bad spell in 2008, Italy condoned some of Germany’s failings.  At this point, the question begs, is Italy the only country to show solidarity to other member states?

At this point too I have to ask, is Germany seeking to dominate Europe with the Euro supremacy as Hitler did with bombs?

Politics and politicians have made Italians, myself included sick to the teeth with their squabbling and tearing to pieces of each other.  But let’s not blame just Berlusconi for this disaffection towards politics- The massacring of Italy came from all sides, both in and beyond Italy.  If anything Berlusconi gave Italy years of stability, governed when others gave up in challenging and difficult times, going from the 9/11 to the financial crash in the US which eventually caught up in Europe.

True to my word, I am neither left or right wing but I back up to the hilt any government that tries to do its ultimate best in the interest of their country.  And if Mario Monti is taking his time over things it is so as to prevent Italy from being swallowed up by the big bad wolf out there.  He has no other choice, for the good of Italy and Europe but to play Russian Roulette.
