290 Berlusconi, Cromwell and The Financial Times
| Voting Board - Italian Parliament |
Oh how the anti-Berlusconi
propaganda loved it when The Financial
Times printed a phrase said by the English
Dictator Oliver Cromwell in order to get rid of King and country but which in
this case the Editorial of the FT referred to Berlusconi: “For God’s sake go!”
And of course we all
know what happened to poor Oliver after he had said that phrase, got rid of
King and Parliament and placed himself as sole ruler of a now Puritan and Republic
England. In his five year rule not only
did Cromwell make England an unhappy place to live in but he too became the
most miserable of men. After his death,
England fell into chaos and the English people soon enough called back their
Prince Charles, whom they had exiled and whose father they had executed, and
the monarchy was well and truly restored.
Trying to adapt that to Italian politics just makes me
laugh.
For one thing, no
matter how one tries to turn the thing around, Berlusconi is not Cromwell- Cromwell
turned England into a joyless nation by depriving people the legitimate ways of
enjoying themselves. In Italy, the
foreign press and internal enemies, amongst which is the Italian justice system,
try to deny the legitimate rights of the Premier to make Italy a merry place to
live in. Cromwell and his army ensured
the Rightful King, Charles I was
executed, declared England a Republic, dismissed parliament- telling them in
God’s name to go home- and set himself up as sole ruler.
Berlusconi has not, or even tried to get rid of the President of Italy and while others are trying to do the undemocratic, unconstitutional and irresponsible thing as to break up parliament- he hangs on tight as he should rightly do so. In complete contrast to Cromwell, Berlusconi doesn’t want to send parliament home and make Italy less stable. But oh, how the FT and not only would love for Italy to be less stable, isn’t that what constitutes false friends from overseas?

Yet Berlusconi’s
real enemies are not from without but from within. What have not the foreign leaders, press, and
all areas of Italy’s left wing done to persuade, cajole, promise those nit-wits of the right-wing parliament
who are willing to sell themselves, change colour, name and face so as to deny
Berlusconi his majority? For one thing I
will take note of these people and make sure they go down on my list of TRAITORS. They have betrayed the trust of the Italian citizen who had voted them for the political party they adhered to. I will remember them particularly when I see
the millions of Euros they have burnt by their disloyalty- And I for one will
use every possible means at my disposal to see they never become parliamentarians
ever again... And never underestimate the power of Internet- after all- it is
eternal.
I hope Berlusconi faces Parliament on Tuesday and if he is given a non-confidence vote, at least we have a name and a face to those who voted against Italy... After which the future looks bleak, there is no one on the other side waiting in the wings to govern, at least not for the moment.

However, there is something drastically wrong with a political system that allows a government, and consequently the country itself to be held in ransom by the whims of individual or collective parliamentarians, bringing down governments after only months in power.
