195. Instigation to Violence on the Social Media
Some months ago I complained to Twitter for allowing anti-Berlusconi accounts to flourish as to my simple mind I consider Twitter, Facebook and other social network as means for interacting, keeping in touch with friends and expressing one’s ideas- Never in my mind would I dream of setting up an account simply to demolish and slander another human being with vehemence, violence, lies and defamation. Twitter replied to say it was not in their policy to use censorship. I was then plastered all over Twitter, by the said account and followers, as someone to unfollow due to my censorship attitude towards free speech! That was not all, by the time they had finished someone could well have mistaken me for the greatest whore living since the Roman Empire- and all this is thanks to freedom of speech! And then you get those who protest in great force that there is no free speech!
The same occurred over in Facebook when someone opened an account to promote a writing competition in Italian of course, as to the best way to kill Berlusconi. It’s like someone in one’s country set up a writing competition as to the best way to kill Obama, the best way to kill Queen Elizabeth, the best way to kill Prince William, and so on- macabre! One has to ask if allowed to continue, where will it all end? How to best blow up the Houses of Parliament, the White House, the Vatican, the Taj Mahal... If someone complains against such initiatives the networks turn round and say “... it is free information without traditional media manipulation.”
But we have to remember one thing, instigation to violence is a crime and punishable by law- if this were not so, human nature being what it is, having no restraint, will cause for anarchy to exist before you and I can bat an eyelid.
But most importantly it is up to each one of us individually to act and behave in a civilized manner towards one another and stop all this VIOLENCE on the net.
