193. Switzerland Says “No” to Minarets
So many voices have been raised against the Swiss referendum vote that says no to the construction of minarets which to the Islamic world is equivalent to the Christian bell towers and spires, with the only difference that minarets are to be taller than any of the surrounding buildings. The Swiss interpreted this as a desire for some minorities to excel in arrogance and dominance and I agree with them simply because in a Christian orientated country as theirs is, to have such “dominance” waved in front of the face of the common man in the street is pure provocation and a real punch in the eye.
Some Italian politician proclaimed that the Swiss decision was one made out of fear. Indeed, I too would be afraid when you give arrogant organizations an inch they will take a mile- drive the rest of us out of our churches, knock down our statues, pull down our bell towers and burn our Crucifixes. That has been done in the past and if good men do nothing, it will be done again.
The EU court and council is no doubt up in arms denouncing lack of tolerance. I hope the EU doesn’t come up with that once again against Italy and deprive Italians of their Crucifix, claiming the display of such is against freedom of worship- rather the opposite is true, and of course such declaration is totally false. Italy has tolerance to sell.
There is a minaret next to the Islamic Mosque that dominates the Roman sky line (see picture at top) and another in Milan- notice how Islam has placed their minarets in strategic basis, one in the cultural and political capital and the other in the economic capital of Italy. And still they are not satisfied, as one ayatollah claims “God has given man all the Earth as a mosque”. Really! I think the God of the Persians, the God of the Hindu, Jain, Buddha, the God of the Chinese (when they had one), and the God of the Jews will have something to say about that.
It is not fair to say Switzerland cannot decree what goes on in her own country and how can there be great intolerance if they don’t want to see their sky line overridden by minarets in a Christian country? The English have no qualms in banning bell-towers for Roman Catholics- you cannot hear or see a single bell on a Catholic church in Britain, nor will you see a Roman Catholic priest outside church grounds with his cassock on- and this is among Christians. I thought I’d point that out just in case The Times or The Guardian and other papers were thinking of splashing, as they have so done in the past, their headlines of “INTOLERANCE” against Italy and Switzerland all over the place.
Of course the whole thing rebounded unto the Vatican who do not approve of such a decision, claiming that integration among men can only be achieved by tolerance of each others’ views. With that I agree. So here’s a plea to Islamic countries, could you not meet us poor Christians half-way and put one of our bell towers or spires in your area of worship- maybe you could also arrange for it to be just that little bit taller than the rest of your minarets... you see, we really would be much obliged!
