162. Does the Economist U.K. Still think Italian Voters are Idiots?
| Italian Mounted Police (Finance-Tax Corps) |
On the reason why Italian voters (of which I am one) voted for Berlusconi’s government, The Economist have come up with this beauty:
“But there is a further explanation, rarely mentioned, which recent events have brought to the fore: that many voters, including some critics of Mr Berlusconi, see him as soft on tax evasion and so vote for him out of self-interest.”
Over a year ago I posted a blog on how people in Italy paid the taxes called “Wicked, Unjust, Illegal, Shocking, Abominable, Dangerous...” The Economist is right, in Italy and not only, the most hated of all things are taxes and the policy of evading as much tax as possible is embedded in the mind, heart and soul of every Italian citizen since time memorial. So it would only be an obtuse politician who would not use that as part of his election campaign- but it wasn’t- that was it: taxes were hardly mentioned in the last campaign: the emphasis was on crime, personal security and tougher laws against those who commit violence of any sort, shape or colour and it was only the right wing who were adamant on that.
Italians had no more patience for those dilly dallying soft, left wing notions on treating crime. I made this point so that The Economist can set its record straight and above all, not make such asshole statements as saying Italian voters are idiots- No hard feelings meant.
P.S. No government, left or right has ever been able to set the tax system straight- and probably never will- just like the cock up civil justice system which is run by 80% of left wing judges! That’s why it’s such a cock up!
