104. Diamonds in the Dust
Diamonds in the Dust in Sierra Leone
I met Sam King (in the photo below) when I signed up with a social site and he dropped me a note asking me to be his friend. I found it rather cute that this young man in his thirties addressed me as Mom Eva- of course I could well be his mother indeed, I’m a retired teacher of 60.
He wished me a blessed day, so I naturally sent the blessing back and it was only then he told me that his vision was of reaching out to street orphans, preaching and feeding them with rice. He wrote, and I must put it in his own Sierra Leone English, because it is quite exquisite:
“It is my greatest prayer and desire to work with you- I am a Pastor and that is my work- I do.”
For a moment, I was quite puzzled: how on earth could I be working with a pastor in the streets of Sierra Leone when I was sitting right here in front of my computer in Italy.
He then told me of his concern, for street children who because of the 10 years civil war were left orphans and would send me pictures because “these starved children need Rice to eat”. I was left impressed by the stark plainness of his writing and the capitalization of “Rice” when other words like “I” were in lower case.
I then realized that I did not have to go to Sierra Leone to do something for these kids. I would put the photos on my blog and write their story. So Sam sent me photos of his, as I have since called
them,
“DIAMONDS IN THE DUST”.
He wrote: “attached are street orphans here in Sierra Leone who are in need of support in feeding and strengthening in kind with Rice, used clothes to clothe the naked.”
Again I simply had to use his own words with that taste of someone imbedded in the flavour of biblical terms like “to clothe the naked”. Then I thought of us Westerners who go shopping for all kinds of superfluous stuff and throw it out as soon as we get fed up of it. Maybe next time you and I throw out a pair of shoes, shirt, pants- anything we should club together and send it off in a parcel to this address:

He then added the following:
1. “ We are in need to purchase Rice, Books and pencils for these orphans
2. Used bibles to strengthen biblical teachings
We are praying that God will open doors and hope to partner men and women with vision beyond the borders and affect lives.”
So there you go, those who have ears to hear, let them hear and do something about it.
And remember next time you are about to throw away that piece of clothing you’ve only worn once... get together with neighbours so the piece of clothing ends up on these children’s backs-
But most importantly these DIAMONDS IN THE DUST need RICE!
