103. Love Thy Neighbour- Never Like This Before

This is how Cappella Maggiore, a town in Northern Italy settles it.
The horse-race Palio which means Prize held every July in Cappella Maggiore, has its origins in a feud between neighbours.
Many years ago before Mayors were invented the Feudal Lord of Cappella Maggiore received complaints from his subjects that there was no water. He therefore sent one of his officers to check the neighbouring Anzano if they had taken the water. The officer came back and said, indeed the inhabitants of the neighbouring Anzano had stolen all the water.
I would wager anyone if at the end of it all any one is able to remember what the squabbles were about in the first place.

“Just as I thought!” the Lord said and declared war upon their neighbour.

One day the officer was taking a walk around the town and noticed some children playing at soldiers on imitation horses.

“What are you doing?” he asked them.
“We are playing at your war.” They answered.

The Officer went away and reported what he had seen to the Lord.

“Good idea those kids had. We will have a horse-race every year so as to remind ourselves never to go to war with one another again.
And so it was that each road dresses up with its own colours, and bearing their flags and ensign they parade through the streets of a hot summer evening in July.
Even the family pet comes along...

These are the flag wavers- a group of young people who instead of getting themselves into a semi-conscious state on a Saturday night come and delight us with their skill.
And it was sky high beautiful!

Something that remains in one's mind

Some have the best of both worlds.
These are the dreaded neighbours of Anzano who in the tale allegedly stole the water.
I don't think I'd like to be messing about with them!

Even the local Parish Priest came along- after all these are more or less the same people who were at the Corpus Christi procession a few weeks ago.

The horse race itself is not all that important and photos in the dark were impossible to take. What is important is that these people have a great time being together in outdoing each other in creativity and imagination..

This is as much of a view of the track that I was able to get. By the way, which street won? Look at the coloured groups again and sooner or later, I will post the answer.

Whether it's a parade or procession, it all helps to bring about unity and fill our minds with memories that delight to fall back upon when the going is tough.
