61. China and the Olympics

eight sided Pagoda
As a child we all got a scrub and put on our best Sunday clothes to go to church. That’s precisely what China has done for the Olympics... it scrubbed out all its obscure doings giving the impression that they observe human rights which in all fairness to some extent they have made an effort, and have put on their best dress for the occasion.

Then suddenly I hear they’ve sent out a document for all athletes to sign that at the Olympics they will keep their mouth firmly shut. Now that’s not nice is it... putting dirty spots on their nice clean Sunday clothes!

Steven Spielberg may have backed out because of Dafur, but such things are beyond me, I just concentrate on little petty things of daily living that I can understand and if someone tells me that I have to sign a contract to gag myself- then I give up- because that... I don’t understand.

And to think that China’s civilization is older than ours! Something I was proud of because with a name like mine I quite believe my ancestors came from Ulan on the border of China, as I was so often told.

In my book, athletes go to the Olympics to perform not to hold a political forum and if some authority thinks otherwise I would send that authority- you know where. So what are these poor athletes going to do? Humiliate themselves and sign? All I can say is keep away from those that do not respect you.

After all, what’s a paltry tainted medal, compared to freedom?
