452. English Together
"English
Together" is the title of the English course planned by the parishes of
Anzano, Cappella Maggiore and Sarmede in the province of Treviso. Here's how it
happened, told by Rudi Roma, one of the students.
Going back to school, at the age of 40, is certainly not to
be taken for granted and yet it is exactly what happened to a group of
"young people" from our three parishes. At first, it all began as a
joke: we knew an English mother tongue teacher, moreover nice, named Eva and we
asked her to help us brush up our old memories related to grammar and
pronunciation. Fortunately for us, she did not play hard to get and from a
small number of people we ended up in being thirteen. Our level of preparation
was very varied but the teacher's ability made it so that we were able to amalgamate
with ease.

We met in the presbytery in Sarmede and, among laughter and
jokes, we succeeded, as our teacher claims, to "fill up, English wise, the
empty holes we had in our heads".
Initially we planned that the course would last 60 hours but,
half way through, we were forced to stop because Eva had an eye problem and
ended up in hospital. This negative circumstance, however, instead of discouraging
us and give up, made us understand that the English lesson had become an
invaluable part of our weekly routine and when we were able to start again, we
found ourselves even more numerous and motivated.

The lessons ended in June with an evening in a pizzeria in
Sarmede, at the end of which we gave Eva a basket of fruit and vegetables and a
new mobile phone, as well as an offer for the parish for the use of the
presbytery. She liked the gifts very much because she understood that they
expressed our sincere affection but, to be honest, the new equipment made her a
little uncomfortable. In any case, the desire to communicate with her students
in whatsApp pushed her to get involved
and, for once, the roles were reversed.
Soon the courses will start again and perhaps there will be a
first and a second level. In addition, Eva hopes to be able to prepare a
textbook which, knowing her, can only be sensational! Rudi Roma
