421. Meriam- End to a Tragic Story

Meriam Ibrahim, at eight months pregnant was chained in jail with her 20 months old son in Sudan because according to a Sudanese judge she had committed adultery in marrying a Christian. She was therefore made to endure 100 lashes and had to give birth at her baby girl Maya in the prison itself. She was also under sentence of death for not repudiating her Christian Faith.

Something near a miracle occurred, the Sudan Court recently set Meriam free but when she, her two children and crippled husband, who is an American citizen tried to leave the country, she was once more stopped. Again another miracle occurred and Meriam was able to take refuge at the American Embassy until yesterday, July 24 when a group of Italian politicians went to fetch the family via the Italian state airline and brought them to Italy as their first stop to meet the Pope, after which they will proceed to their final destination- the United States of America.

A happy, if not miraculous ending to what had started off as a senseless brutality inflicted on a defenceless woman.
Thank you Meriam for being a Christian!
