416. Mariam, A 2014 Christian Martyr

Mariam, a young woman whose Muslim father left her Christian mother when Mariam was three years old has been given 100 lashes because according to a Sudanese Judge, Mariam committed adultery in marrying her husband who is a Christian- and all this in a country supposedly to be, civilized whose Constitution specifically states there is freedom of worship and religion- this is Sudan.

But that’s only the tip of the ice-berg.  Mariam who has been imprisoned with her 20 month son in prison since February 2014, and what is more she is now, May 2014, eight months pregnant... Oh yes, did I forget to mention? She has been sentenced to death by this same Sudanese Judge who obviously has, as G.K. Chesterton would put it, gone mad.

“The madman goes mad not from being wrong, but from being right about one thing to the exclusion of all others. Or, as Chesterton says, the madman’s philosophy leads him to where he finds himself “in the clean, well-lit prison of one idea.”

And this is what Pope Francis was probably referring to in yesterday’s homily when he said “Heresy is an idea gone mad.”

Muslim women carted off like cattle

Such barbaric abuse of a person’s human rights can only be described as madness of they who commit it. Yet when it comes to demanding protection for their own human rights Muslims are at the top of the list- demanding Italian authorities take down Crucifixes being displayed in public places since it offends their sensibilities as human beings!!!

I wonder how much offence the 100 lashes to an innocent woman like Mariam has caused to such Muslims sensibilities???  And being imprisoned with a young child, being eight months pregnant and condemned to death because she has no other faith but the one she knows does not seem to offend Muslim sensibilities in the least... Is this nothing less of madness?

UPDATE: Mariam gave birth to a baby girl Tuesday 27th May named Maya.
