258. Italian Parliament Flares Up.

The controversy which flared up in the lower house of the Italian Parliament a day or two ago ended in the worst possible way.  It all began with Dario Franceschini, a member of the opposition who criticized the decision of the majority to reverse the order of the day, giving priority to the debate on the Judicial Reform and the “quick trial” system to be put into process.

The Minister of Defence Ignazio La Russa, frustrated by once again being held up by the opposition began to applaud controversially Franceshini.  At this point, Fini, Chairman of the Chamber calls on the Minister not to be disrespectful towards opposing colleagues.

La Russa reacted in a most human but un-gentlemanly manner by giving the f---- off sign to the Chairman.

Throughout all these proceedings the whole house took on the semblance of a witches’ cauldron with clashes and bangs shouts and hollering from all sides, so the icing on the cake of Ignizio La Russa’s unmistakable sign of annoyance seemed only a logical conclusion.

The tension in Parliament has reached its limit it seems.  But then one has to consider this is not an easy time for Italy and those who try to govern it.  There is the much needed judicial reform which as I have often explained in my blogs is a system so weighed down with unnecessary rules and regulations that a trial can last a decade- if you are lucky, where judges are not held accountable for any sentence given.   We have the people in Naples who do not want to put their rubbish in the proper bins that it is supposed to be put.  We have other European Nations, as France, bossing us about and ordering us to go to war.  We have illegal immigrants who come in their hordes every day, and there is no room to put them- apart from the fact we have to put up with complaints they are fed-up of eating macaroni... haven’t we anything else?  We have an unreceptive EU community who has zero tolerance with immigrants.  We have immigrants travelling to  the border of Italy /France (Ventimiglia) in order to migrate to France and who are promptly pushed back into Italy without even a piece of bread... or France even considering that most of these are ex-French colonial citizens and speak fluent French.

And as if all this is not enough, we have the left wing creating as many obstacles as they can so as to prevent the government from going ahead with plans at all levels and the continuous hum drum of their leader Bersani claiming there is no government in Italy.

That’s quite a statement!  I should very much like to see what the opposition and Co. would do if there really was no government in these troubled times.  All I can suggest is they had better have a good stock of toilet paper on hand.

Fortunately we have a remarkable President here in Italy, Giorgio Napolitano who summoned all these warring parliamentarians and in no uncertain terms told them this cannot be tolerated.  Furthermore, he claimed, Berlusconi remains for as long as he has the numbers to govern... after all, at the end of the day, this in effect is what all the aggravation is about, is it not? says I.
