240. Jesus was Born in Turmoil: Anything Changed today?

Enacting the First Nativity

Meeting of the Sunday School children in our area

I have spent a few moments in turmoil myself this past week on facebook with someone intent on convincing me that I was a gullible idiot to believe in a fake religion and that Christians were “liars, beggars, thieves and child molesters”, and more, he believed it was his task to make sure “ I'm going to destroy your chances of ever imposing your false beliefs on the greater majority of humans for humanity's sake”

Oh well, never mind!

Our Church is dedicated to Saint Anthony
And this brings to mind the gathering of children of the parishes in our area with their, what I would interpret as, “Sunday School Teachers”, except they do their work during the week.  The gathering was held at our church in Sarmede where a performance of the First Nativity, invented by Saint Francis in 1223 was enacted and at which point as in 1223, “Baby Jesus” was no longer a statue but a real child in flesh and blood.  As our church is dedicated to Saint Anthony, we had a Friar from Padua, Father Danilo, to lead the proceedings.

In an age where we find the scholastic world has never been so secular before, we may well ask ourselves in whose hands lies the future of our faith?

First and foremost it lies in the hands of parents of whose example there is no better teaching, and then in priests, religious people, educators and the faithful themselves.  But to grasp the facts well and understand the events that have truly happened we need a structure- life as it was lived by Jesus is not transmitted through thin air.  You need people who know this story well and are able to tell it to others in an enthusiastic way.

However, not all of us are able to carry out this task and so we have these weekly meetings with the “Sunday School Classes”.  And it is precisely during this hour that our children and youth can grasp systematically the mysteries of our faith.  Without such instructions, the teaching of our faith would be like a game of Russian Roulette.

Hence the importance of that hour of Sunday School teaching- and it is better not to underestimate it, you will need it when you have to confront yourself with certain people whom you come across in certain bars, discos, internet sites, and even facebook.
