38. Only God can Save Italy

My Village Church

There was not much news this morning except that the cry of Berlusconi’s lament of yesterday’s “look what they did to me” bit, was clarified.

It seems that about ten Senators were thinking of boycotting the vote on the Budget and Berlusconi invited them to dinner and for that reason he is under investigation by the Magistrates of Naples. It has to be remembered that the government has a majority of one- if that- at the Senate. And since the Senate seems to have become an old people’s home, with an infirmary on the spot to recuperate broken crutches, walking sticks and heart failure pills; inviting 10 Senators to dinner has to be a much serious crime… if not treason, very near it!!!

The former Prime Minister defends himself with his usual ironical nonchalant smile that having been educated by the Salesians (a religious order of priests), he only put into practise their method which was no comparison to that employed by the Magistrates who held the Senators for questioning almost eight hours and put secret agents to spy on them- just in case they caught them red handed- talking to Berlusconi!!!

I have no comments to make on this- otherwise they may obliterate my blog!!!

By the way, Berlusconi said all this while on his way to the market square in Milan where he was going to distribute pasta to pensioners in protest for the rise in prices- in effect I noticed only a few days ago that I was forking out 30% more on a packet of pasta than a week or so ago- and I buy a lot of pasta for my dogs and imprecise number of cats.

With nostalgia for the freedom I personally enjoyed in Britain where my opinions have never been submitted to such coercion, I turned my thoughts to the reports on Sky News on Diana’s death. Sarah Hughes, the journalist, reported what was said in the inquest including that Dodi’s ex-girlfriend called Dodid’s father a ‘monster’- just imagine if I try to say that about someone over here who, in any case, probably deserves it much more than Mr Al Fayed Senior!!!

Until gagging here is so fashionable, it is no wonder Italy is without hope- as Ian Fisher for The New York Times so rightly said yesterday… and at this stage- only God can save Italy!

P.S. I believe there is one political leader who once claimed he could walk on waters!!!
